"Paris was used to test the kiosks, which are currently being improved. However, we will be ready, particularly because we are now certain that EES will begin after the Olympics, possibly at the beginning of 2025, according to Nicolas Paulissen, a delegate for the Union of French Airports, who spoke to Connexion France.
For the control of the EU's external borders, a new security system called the EES was launched in 2017. By gathering biometric data on people entering and exiting its territory, as well as deterring those who pose any kind of security concern from entering, the EU hopes to make its borders safer.
France chose Thales, a French multinational corporation that designs, develops, and manufactures electrical systems, equipment, and devices for the transportation and security sectors, back in March 2021 to provide a large number of pre-registration kiosks at several of its border crossing locations.
Likewise, EU Helpers states that the registration procedure at its kiosks will take less than a minute.
As a result, Thales kiosks placed in French ports, train stations, and airports "will enable third-country nationals to be pre-registered and have their identity verified in less than one minute," according to the company.
The new Entry/Exit System is expected to reduce wait times at the French-British border, but a recent study from the French government's watchdog on public finances, Cour des Comptes, has sparked worries that they could increase substantially.
According to the survey, even if Eurostar's average check-in time has gone up since Brexit, waiting times that double or even triple could persuade some passengers to take a plane.
The kiosks France needs to implement the EES have already been ordered, while many other Schengen nations are still lagging behind despite their claims to be "in line" with other Member States.
Only one nation has finished all of the necessary preparations for the start-up of the Entry/Exit System at its borders so far, and that is Lithuania. Over 70 self-service kiosks and more than 30 automated border crossing lanes will be installed by the nation at its border crossing thanks to the selection of Easier and Idemia.
Choosing IDEMIA to provide them with the kiosks required for the EES's implementation, Iceland and Denmark have also chosen IDEMIA.
