Compensation for Delayed or Cancelled Flights
The amount of compensation you can receive for a delayed or cancelled flight depends on the distance of the flight. The compensation amounts are structured as follows:
1. Flights covering distances of 1,500 kilometers or less: Compensation is EUR 250.
2. Flights within the European Union (intra-Community flights) exceeding 1,500 kilometers and flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometers: Compensation is EUR 400.
3. All other flights: Compensation is EUR 600.
Compensation can be paid in cash, electronic bank transfer, bank orders, bank cheques, or, with the passenger’s consent, in the form of travel vouchers and/or other services.
Eligibility for Compensation Based on Delay Duration
To qualify for compensation, the flight delay must typically exceed a certain minimum duration, which varies based on regulations and policies. Generally, the required delay duration ranges from 3 to 5 hours. The specific threshold for compensation eligibility may also depend on the length of the flight and any applicable regional or airline-specific laws.
Extraordinary Circumstances
Airlines are exempt from providing monetary compensation for delays or cancellations caused by extraordinary circumstances. These are situations beyond the airline's control, such as severe weather conditions, political instability, security risks, or strikes that affect airport operations. In such cases, the airline is not required to compensate passengers monetarily.
