In 2022, there will be 11.8 million part-time workers in Germany, up from 9.2 million in 2010, according to data released on Monday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
The bulk of part-time workers, or 9.18 million, were women, who had an increase of 22% over 2010, while the highest growth was among men, who saw an increase of 53%, bringing their number to almost 2.6 million.
What else did the data reveal?
According to Destatis, the number of persons with full-time jobs climbed during the course of the previous 12 years, reaching 27.2 million. However, part-time employment made up a larger portion of the overall increase in employment (28%), which, according to Destatis, "could be a sign that full-time jobs are, on the whole, being replaced by part-time employment."
However, part-time employees tended to put in more hours in 2022 than they did in 2010, with a working week of 21.2 hours in 2022 as opposed to 18.4 hours in 2010. Men worked 19.5 hours a week, an increase of 14%, while women saw an increase of 16%, working 21.7 hours a week.
The average work week for full-time employees decreased from 40.6 hours in 2010 to 40 hours in 2022, a decrease of around half an hour.
Women in this industry worked 39.2 hours a week as opposed to 40.4 hours for men.
The two opposing tendencies led to a 34.3-hour average work week, which is 24 minutes shorter than in 2010.
