Germany's new Opportunity Card, designed to simplify the process for non-EU citizens to enter the country for job searching, officially takes effect today, June 1, 2024. The Opportunity Card will be most beneficial for foreigners contemplating a move to Germany but uncertain about the job opportunities available in the country.
With the Opportunity Card, also known as the Chancenkarte, non-EU citizens can enter the country without needing to show proof of a permanent employment contract. The Opportunity Card allows for an extended stay and entitles its holders to take on trial or part-time jobs. If foreigners secure a suitable job while in Germany on an Opportunity Card, they can then apply for long-term residency, a process made easier by already having a job offer.
The Opportunity Card is available to skilled workers or those who score six or more points in the points system. Skilled workers with a German or foreign university degree or professional qualification do not need to meet any additional special requirements to obtain an Opportunity Card. However, those who are not skilled workers can only acquire the Opportunity Card through the points system. Non-EU citizens must provide proof of completing two years of vocational training or holding a university degree to qualify for an Opportunity Card. Additionally, they must demonstrate sufficient language skills in German and English, at A1 and B2 levels respectively. Applicants must also prove their financial stability to be eligible for the Opportunity Card.
