Domestic inflows drove the recovery of Germany’s tourism sector last year, while international spending remains at over 25% of 2019 levels and is expected to continue at this rate this year. According to the latest report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Germany's travel and tourism sector has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels in terms of its contribution to GDP, employment, and spending by international visitors, compared to other major European destinations.
The WTTC forecasts that the overall GDP contribution of Germany’s tourism sector will recover. However, both employment and spending by international visitors are expected to remain below pre-pandemic levels. During this period, the Travel & Tourism sector is projected to contribute almost €469 billion to Germany’s economy in 2024, a 0.5% increase from 2019. Jobs in the sector are forecast to rise by 160,000 this year but will still be 80,000 below pre-pandemic peak levels.
Spending by international visitors is expected to remain nearly 10% lower than in 2019, with a deficit of €5.1 billion in 2024 compared to five years ago. Meanwhile, domestic spending is anticipated to continue growing modestly this year, increasing by 1.2% to nearly €411 billion.
According to the WTTC report, the sector’s impact on German GDP rose to over €453 billion last year, down €13.5 billion from 2019. At the same time, employment in Travel & Tourism increased by 5% to 6.18 million but was still nearly 250,000 lower than in 2019. Worldwide visitor expenditure in 2023 was more than 25% lower than in 2019, with global visitors spending €14 billion less compared to 2019.
However, domestic visitor expenditure fully recovered in 2023, exceeding 2019 levels by €2.9 billion. This indicates that domestic visitors have led the recovery following the pandemic. By 2034, the WTTC predicts that with appropriate government support, the sector could boost its annual GDP contribution to nearly €554 billion. This would account for more than 12% of the German economy and could employ almost 6.5 million people across the country.
