President Emmanuel Macron has 'threatened Kosovo with visa liberalisation suspension' if the authorities fail to follow their pledges,' according to AFP, the French international news agency, EU Helpers says.
In a joint press conference with the Albanian prime minister, Macron stated that he expects the two nations to make a commitment to striking a deal since it is essential for their respective objectives to join the European Union.
The remarks came after President Macron was questioned about his thoughts on the Serb President's stance following the terrorist attack that took place in the northern part of Kosovo. In response, Macron said that President Vucic should denounce the attack, which claimed the lives of one police officer and three attackers.
The reorganization of polls in the towns (in northern Kosovo) where they were held in unsuitable circumstances is one of the three key demands made of Kosovar and Serb authorities, he continued. Serb involvement in these elections and institutions, as well as Kosovar authorities' acceptance of the Association of Serbian Municipalities.
The French Embassy in Kosovo and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been approached by EU Helpers for additional remarks on the situation, but neither party has yet responded.
The President's Press Office, on the other hand, made it clear that Kosovo's request for visa liberalization is still pending. According to the same source, the remarks made at a press conference in Albania were in reference to the tensions between Serbia and Kosovo as well as the sanctions imposed by the latter, which have caused the French President to view the issue of visa liberalization as an open cause.
The German Embassy has reaffirmed that Kosovars will be able to enter the Schengen Area without a visa as of next year, despite the French President's threat to do so.
This April, the 1.7 million-person country of Kosovo finally received a favorable response from the EU Parliament, allowing citizens to travel to the Schengen Area after nearly 14 years of the nation beginning its visa liberalization process. Kosovar nationals will be able to travel freely starting on January 1, 2024.
The Kosovar government has already started its campaign to tell citizens about traveling visa-free to Schengen nations, which is a long-awaited victory for this country.
However, throughout the past year, political tensions between Prishtina and Belgrade have increased, particularly in the wake of the terrorist assault carried out by Serb nationals in Kosovo's northern area, which is primarily Serb-populated.
