Portugal's government has chosen to prolong the validity of documents and visas for immigrants by one year, now effective until June 30, 2025. In a statement, Portugal's government announced the approval of a decree-law assigning the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) the proactive role of attracting immigrants, integrating and enhancing the Migration Observatory as part of these government entities.
Additionally, Portugal's government has endorsed a resolution establishing a Mission Structure within AIMA to address pending processes related to the regularization of foreign nationals, as reported by Portugal News. Recently, Luís Goes Pinheiro, President of the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA), disclosed that Portugal currently faces 410,000 pending immigrant cases.
To address this challenge, Pinheiro announced plans for the Migration Agency to recruit over 100 new employees. Despite this effort, he acknowledged that the current staffing may not suffice to fully meet the demand. He pledged to resolve more than 400,000 pending cases by the upcoming summer.
Earlier this month, the Portuguese Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) disclosed that last year, Portugal hosted over one million international residents.
AIMA highlighted this as a record high, marking a 130% increase compared to 2022 figures. According to a report from Diario de Noticias, last year saw 392,000 more individuals granted residence permits compared to 2022.
