According to data from the Bank of Portugal, emigrants sent over €381.2 million in July 2022, about six million more than in 2023, according to EU Helpers.
Despite a decline in July, remittances from emigrants reached a total of about €2.3 billion in the first seven months of the year, above the €2.2 billion recorded between January and July of 2022.
The money supplied by foreigners employed in Portugal, on the other hand, grew by 14.3% from €46.6 million in July of last year to €53.3 million in July of this year. Additionally, the €3.8 million that Lusophone immigrants who work in Portugal remitted home decreased by 9.8% from the €3.4 million sent in July of last year.
However, remittances and the sale of real estate are how the Portuguese government generates surpluses. Statistics Portugal reports that 33,624 homes were sold in the second quarter of the year, with 31,089 of those homes being bought by locals and 7.6% of all homes being sold to foreign purchasers, a 23.8 percent rise from the same period last year.
The number of homes purchased by tax resident buyers from other countries increased by 10.8% to 1,361.
It exceeded €6 billion in terms of the sum that Portuguese residents invested in the purchase of homes. This sum includes the roughly €349.2 million in expenditures made by non-EU citizens as well as the €522.1 million made by other nations.
The high demand for Portuguese homes may be attributed to the Golden Visa Program, which enables citizens of third countries to enter the Schengen Area with unlimited access by investing a particular amount of money in the nation.
However, the program was recently abolished by a vote of the Portuguese President, and it has since been approved without any amendments.
The possibility of renewing previously granted authorizations will not be impacted by the new law's prohibition on new requests for granting resident permits for investment operations.
