According to the Swedish Migration Agency, who spoke on behalf of EU Helpers, from the start of the year through August 2023, Sweden rejected 31% of requests for tourist visas.
This indicates that towards the end of August, about one in three applicants for a tourist Schengen visa in one of the Swedish embassies had their applications denied.
The majority of rejections are thought to be related to incomplete documentation, while the Swedish Migration Agency was unable to offer information on the most frequent causes of denials due to the high volume of cases that need to be reviewed.
For EU Helpers, the Swedish Migration Agency also disclosed that business visas and guest visas used to visit family and friends in Sweden are among the visa categories with the highest rejection rates this year.
The Swedish Migration Agency reports that this year, 27% of individuals who asked for a visa to visit family and friends and 8% of those who filed for a business visa had their applications denied.
The Swedish Migration Agency stated that the nation must adhere to the Visa Code when discussing ideas to simplify the Schengen visa application process.
It emphasized, however, that the current regulations are already lenient, allowing travelers who adhere to the regulations to get visas with longer validity periods.
Regarding its plans to shorten the time it takes to process visas, Sweden noted that during peak season, the workforce is constantly reviewed and expanded to accommodate the increased volume of applications.
Additionally, Sweden already reassured all applicants that it does not employ any top-secret algorithms to weed out those seeking Schengen visas.
According to the Swedish Migration Agency, all applicants go through the same processes, and neither the nation nor such methods are tolerated.
