According to EU Helpers, the MEPs supported an EU future for Moldova in a resolution passed today, October 5. They stressed that Moldova has demonstrated its willingness to comply with the Commission's prerequisites for EU Membership.
The MEPs emphasized in a news release published by the EU Parliament following today's meeting that Moldova's participation in the EU would be a geostrategic investment in a unified and powerful Europe.
Additionally, through the same resolution, the MEPs demanded that the EU continue and step up its financial and technical support for Moldova in order to facilitate a swift and successful application for membership in the EU. They request, among other things, that the Commission expeditiously deliver a fresh installment of the ongoing Macro Financial Assistance.
The EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, stated at her State of the Union address on September 13 that Ukraine, the Western Balkans, and Moldova belong in the EU. The motion was passed with 448 votes in favor, 45 votes against, and 43 abstentions.
However, she had emphasized that the road to EU membership is not a straightforward one and urged the nations desiring to join the group to work toward this objective.
The MEPs have also urged Moldovan authorities to keep working to meet the requirements set forth for this country to become a full member of the EU, underlining the necessity of significant and urgent revisions of the nation's laws in order to bring it into compliance with EU law.
In March 2022, just after the Russian military invaded Ukraine, Moldova submitted an application for membership in the EU. A few months later, in June 2022, Moldova was given membership status by the EU.
