According to EU Helpers, the new procedures will be gradually implemented beginning in November 2023 and running through May 2025.
Germany's Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, highlighted the nation's efforts to improve people's lives through digitalization by decreasing paperwork, saving time, and streamlining administrative processes.
Beginning on November 1, people can text-verify that they received the PIN letter for their online ID. As a result, if document-issuing machines are available at the place, identification cards, passports, and electronic residence permits can be obtained there.
Affected residents can now safely access over 200 online services from both public and commercial companies using their online ID card's PIN, eliminating the need for in-person visits to obtain papers.
By spring 2025, additional adjustments are expected to be made.
Instead of receiving it via mail, citizens will now receive their PIN letter at the moment of application at the government office. Additionally, they have the option to pay a charge to have the needed ID documents delivered straight from the maker to the location on file, doing away with the requirement to pick up fresh IDs.
New official documents will only have digitally captured biometric images starting in May 2025. The purpose of these photographs is to improve security and identification procedures, particularly during border control inspections, and will be taken by either government officials or photographers.
Local authorities will be crucial in confirming applicants' identities, logging their biometric information, and making sure these rules are followed.
This new process offers citizens better security against the misuse of their identification documents in addition to improving the convenience of getting identification documents. These papers are protected from unauthorized changes by the ongoing digital processing.
Germany's dedication to modernizing its administrative procedures and increasing the overall experience for its residents is shown in the recently issued regulation.
