The Ministry of Immigration and Integration has confirmed in a statement that the fee for applying for Danish citizenship will increase from 4,000 Danish Krone (€536) to 6,000 Danish Krone (€804). In announcing the changes, the Ministry argued that the new fee would be raised to more accurately reflect the costs of case processing.
The Minister stated that there were frequent instances of applicants repeatedly applying and being rejected, and argued that it is unfair for people to apply multiple times without paying. Before 2018, the fee for applying for Danish citizenship was 1,200 DKK (€168). In 2021, it was increased from 3,800 DKK (€509) to 4,000 DKK, and now it will be 6,000 DKK, representing a 50 percent increase.
The Ministry's statement also announced the introduction of a new fee for individuals who have had two previous applications for citizenship rejected and are applying again. Regarding this, Immigration law rapporteur Heidi Bank (V) stated that it is "absolutely necessary" to continually revisit the rules on citizenship to close loopholes that can be exploited by individuals "who should not have access to Danish citizenship."
In March 2023, the Danish government announced plans to introduce a new fee for repeated citizenship applications. Before this measure, applicants paid a 4,000 DKK fee and could reapply numerous times at no additional cost. Internationals in Denmark who plan to apply for citizenship soon can still do so under the current rules, as the new fees will not take effect until a bill is passed by parliament.
