Starting in 2025, Sweden will launch a digital passport verification system for foreigners applying for study or work permits. This innovative service allows applicants from eligible countries to complete passport checks online, eliminating the need to visit an embassy or consulate. Here’s everything you need to know about the process.
Who Can Use Sweden’s Digital Passport Check?
From September 10, 2025, citizens of 74 visa-free countries can use the digital passport verification service. This includes international students and professionals applying for residence permits to work or study in Sweden. The system streamlines the application process, saving time and avoiding costly trips to Swedish embassies.
Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:
-
Apply for a residence permit to work or study in Sweden.
-
Submit the application through the electronic service.
-
Be a citizen of one of the 74 visa-free countries approved for digital passport checks.
Eligible Countries for Digital Passport Control
The countries eligible for this service include: Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, and 44 more.
How the Digital Passport Check Works
Applicants will follow these steps to complete the digital verification:
-
Receive a Personal Link: The Swedish Migration Agency will send an email with a unique link to the digital passport check service.
-
Use an E-Passport: Your passport must contain a chip (e-passport). Passports without this chip cannot be verified digitally.
-
Download the Freja App: Freja is a mobile e-ID service approved by Swedish authorities. Scan your passport using Freja to send your digital passport data securely to the Migration Agency.
Important Notes:
-
Multiple Applicants: Freja verifies one passport at a time. For multiple applicants, use separate devices or repeat the process on the same device.
-
Children Under Five: Parents can add children’s passports in their app without identity verification. Children aged five and above require their own Freja account.
-
Verification Delays: Identity verification in Freja may take up to 24 hours. The personal link is valid for seven days.
What If Freja Cannot Verify Your Identity?
If verification fails, applicants may need to schedule an in-person passport check at a Swedish Embassy or Migration Agency Service Center. Using the personal link, you can notify authorities about the issue to avoid delays.
Continued Use of Freja in Sweden
After moving to Sweden, Freja can also be used to obtain a full electronic ID recognized by other government agencies. You’ll need to:
-
Register with the Swedish Tax Agency.
-
Apply for a personal or coordination number.
-
Notify the Tax Agency of your move via Freja once your residence permit is granted.
Professional Assistance for a Smooth Move
Hiring migration specialists can ensure your application is error-free and processed efficiently. Experts can:
-
Help prepare complete documentation.
-
Guide you through digital passport verification.
-
Advise on next steps after arrival, including personal number registration and tax agency procedures.
With digital passport checks, Sweden is simplifying migration for international students and professionals. By following the correct steps, applicants can save time, reduce stress, and focus on their educational or career goals.
