The European Union has implemented more advantageous Schengen visa regulations for Indian citizens, enabling them to request multiple-entry visas with extended validity periods. On April 18, 2024, the Commission implemented relaxed regulations. Under these new guidelines, Indian applicants for Schengen visas will be eligible for multiple-entry visas with extended validity, subject to specific conditions being met.
According to EU authorities, the recently introduced regulations allow Indians to acquire multiple-entry visas lasting up to two years. To qualify for this visa category, Indians must have obtained and appropriately utilized two Schengen visas within the past three years. Following the initial two-year visa, individuals are likely to qualify for a five-year Schengen visa if their passport maintains sufficient validity. This system benefits frequent Indian travelers to the EU with established travel records by offering easier access to extended visas. While holding multiple-entry Schengen visas, individuals enjoy the same privileges as those with visa-free entry to the bloc. These visa holders can enter Schengen member states multiple times within a year, adhering to the 90/180-day rule. Conversely, applicants without two visas in the past three years will continue to receive Schengen visas with shorter validity until they establish a travel history demonstrating their intent for travel or business within the Schengen Area, with a commitment to return to their home country.
According to Schengen Visa Statistics for 2022, 671,928 Indians applied for a Schengen visa, with 541,094 being approved. Among those approved, 296,964 received multiple-entry visas, while the rest obtained single-entry visas. Although data for 2023 has not been disclosed yet, it is anticipated that the number of Indian visa applicants surpassed that of 2022.
