Teodora Marinska, the Chief Operating Officer and Head of Public Affairs at the European Travel Commission, has emphasized that digitizing the Schengen visa application process will enhance accessibility and convenience for foreigners entering the bloc.
During the Arabian Travel Market held in Dubai on Monday, Marinska highlighted the challenges faced by foreigners needing a Schengen visa, such as difficulty in securing appointment slots due to high demand. She also noted instances where applicants opt for embassies in other Schengen countries due to easier procedures and appointment unavailability in their intended destination. Marinska emphasized that digitalizing the process will revolutionize visa application, providing a seamless procedure and automatic appointment allocation.
Additionally, she underscored the importance of EU authorities ensuring that online processes prevent border delays and do not impose additional burdens on transportation operators. Once the Schengen visa application is digitalized, all procedures, except for first-time applicants, can be completed online via a single platform. Physical visits to embassies or consulates will become unnecessary, significantly reducing costs to only the visa fee. Moreover, the transition to online applications will eliminate the need for extensive document printing and collection, as applicants can upload electronic copies of their travel and supporting documents directly onto the platform. EU authorities have clarified that first-time applicants, individuals with invalid biometric data, and those with new travel documents will still need to appear in person for their applications.
With the transition to an online process, individuals required to visit a consulate, embassy, or visa center will experience reduced waiting times. Additionally, all visa applicants will have the opportunity to specify their preferred member state for processing on the platform. Once applicants and relevant Schengen member state authorities complete the entire process, applicants will receive notification of their application decision through the same platform. Visas will be issued digitally, featuring a 2D barcode and cryptographic signature.
