The European Commission has introduced a new initiative aimed at speeding up the process of border checks within the European Union. As part of this proposal, a new EU Digital Travel Application will soon be launched, allowing travellers to create and manage their digital credentials seamlessly.
This innovative application will enable travellers to upload images of their travel documents and store essential information related to their journey. One of the key features of the app is its ability to verify the authenticity of the travel documents and match them to the traveller’s facial identity. This automated verification process is expected to reduce wait times at border crossings and enhance the efficiency of security checks.
While the application is still under development and will undergo rigorous testing before receiving approval from the European Commission’s agency, eu-LISA, Member States have already begun issuing digital travel documents in preparation for the system's rollout. Once fully operational, the EU Digital Travel Application is anticipated to streamline the border experience for both travellers and authorities, marking a significant step toward more efficient travel within the EU.
