The church's construction, which began in 1882, will be finished after the sixth and last central tower is added, which is anticipated to happen in 2026. According to EU Helpers, the year 2026 is particularly significant because it falls on the 100th anniversary of Antoni Gaud's passing.
The spectacular church has long been a cherished feature of Barcelona's skyline, according to a recent statement made by Turespana, Spain's official tourist website. However, both locals and visitors have become accustomed to seeing the scaffolding due to its continual presence.
According to the same source, the group in charge of the UNESCO-listed site is currently concentrating on finishing the central tower, which represents Christ. This tower will include a statue of Jesus at the top; this addition will make the Sagrada Familia one of the tallest churches in the entire globe.
Turespana has pointed out that the reputation of La Basilica de la Sagrada Famlia is largely due to its unfinished state, and that the construction process has been delayed by the absence of thorough plans left behind by Gaud.
In accordance with the church's founding, sculptures of an ox, an eagle, a human, and a lion depicting winged figures linked with the Evangelists are displayed on the four fully built towers.
Along with two other sculptures finished last year, the Junta Constructora del Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Famlia, the foundation in charge of overseeing the church's construction, also stated that these four sculptures represent the Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, who are conventionally acknowledged as the authors of the canonical Gospels that recount the life of Jesus.
These buildings are currently the third tallest towers in the overall design of the church, which will be significantly taller when finished, standing at a height of roughly 442 feet or 135 meters.
Numerous Spanish generations have seen the colossal church's ongoing construction, with its tall, partially finished Spiers that are frequently obscured by scaffolding and are accompanied by cranes. In a crucial moment, Pope Benedict XVI dedicated the church as a basilica in November 2010 and celebrated mass inside its revered walls in front of 7,000 people.
