According to a news release from the Finnish Immigration Services, the duration of student residence permits issued for degree-related studies beginning on June 1, 2022, will need to be checked after the decision has been made.
The Finnish Immigration Services will monitor the status of the studies, including when they began, how far along they are, if the student's entitlement to study is still in effect, and other issues pertaining to those who have student residence permits.
Authorities grant study-related residence permit holders longevity for the duration of their studies in accordance with a 2022 legislative modification. Before this change, the prerequisites were verified when a student asked to extend their residence permit.
The automatic register checks that form the basis of the automatic post-decision monitoring will allow the Finnish authorities to do register checks on several national registries. Some of the post-decision monitoring processes will be automated, but the decision to revoke a residence permit will be made by a representative of the Finnish Immigration Service.
Cases of automatic post-decision that will be keeping track of register checks require a closer examination and will be forwarded to a representative of the Finnish Immigration Service. Based on certain instances, an estimation and decision will be made regarding the customer's situation. The client will be informed if there are any reasons to believe that the residence permit should be revoked.
The customer has 30 days from the date they receive the decision to request a review of the decision if their residence permit is revoked. Typically, the client's entitlement to employment remains in effect, and they are permitted to remain in Finland up until the request for review is handled.
Since 2017, the Finnish Immigration Service has conducted post-decision surveillance. The agency selects the post-decision monitoring targets each year.
