Finland is set to introduce new measures aimed at retaining international talent by offering permanent residency to those who complete a master’s degree in the country. Under the proposed rules, graduates who pass a Finnish or Swedish language exam would be eligible to apply for permanent residency.
The move comes in response to concerns raised by Finland’s Minister of Employment, Arto Santonen, who revealed that only about half of international students choose to stay in Finland after completing their studies. This trend has led to a significant loss of skilled talent, with many graduates opting to pursue careers in other countries.
Minister Santonen emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, stressing that the government must develop effective strategies to encourage talented individuals to build their careers and lives in Finland. The new residency proposal is part of a broader effort to make Finland an attractive destination for skilled professionals and international students alike.
