France solidified its position as a preferred destination for international travelers, issuing a total of 2.1 million visas. Notably, 36.5 percent of these were multiple-entry visas (MEVs), allowing holders to enter and exit the Schengen Area multiple times during the visa's validity. However, not all applicants were successful—16.7 percent of visa requests were rejected, amounting to 436,893 denied applications.
Among the many nationalities applying for French visas, three countries stand out: China, Morocco, and Algeria. Nationals from these countries showed a marked preference for France over other Schengen countries, such as Germany.
China
Chinese nationals led the list of Schengen visa applicants in 2023, with nearly a quarter of all applications directed towards France. In total, Chinese applicants submitted 1.1 million visa applications, making France a top choice for those traveling within the Schengen Zone.
Morocco
France remains a key destination for Moroccan travelers, consistently ranking as one of the top Schengen countries for visa applications. In 2023, Moroccan nationals filed 591,401 Schengen visa applications, with over half—52.4 percent or 310,057 applications—specifically requesting entry to France.
Algeria
Algerian nationals also favoured France as their primary destination within the Schengen Area. Of the 279,005 Schengen visa applications submitted by Algerians in 2023, 58.8 percent were aimed at securing entry to France. Spain was the second-most popular country for Algerian visa applicants, but France remains the clear favourite.
These figures underscore France’s continuing appeal as a major travel hub for international visitors, particularly from these three countries.
