In a significant update to German citizenship law, adopted in June, the government has introduced streamlined procedures for foreigners seeking German nationality, including the allowance for dual citizenship.
One of the most notable changes allows residents to apply for citizenship after just five years, compared to the previous requirement of eight years. Foreigners married to German citizens can now qualify after four years of residency.
Additionally, well-integrated individuals who demonstrate fluency in German, stable employment, and financial security may be eligible for citizenship within three years. Children born to foreign parents can also benefit from the new law, becoming eligible for citizenship after five years, down from eight.
The naturalisation test has been updated, with the number of questions increased to 12, including topics on Judaism and Israel.
