According to INE, there were more than 38 million overnight stays in Spanish hotel businesses in September of this year, which represents a 5.8% rise over the 35.9 million overnight stays recorded in the same month last year, according to EU Helpers.
In addition, compared to the same period in 2022, overnight stays rose by 8.4% in the first nine months of 2023. These numbers also exceed what was seen in the first nine months of 2019.
According to the source, approximately 11.8 million overnight stays were made in Spain by travelers in September of this year. On the other side, more than 26.2 million of those overnight stays were by visitors from abroad.
The data also showed that Barcelona, Madrid, and Calvià were the most popular Spanish tourist destinations for overnight stays this month.
Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community were the most popular travel destinations for Spaniards, accounting for 21.9 percent, 13.7%, and 11.8 percent of all overnight stays, respectively.
On the other hand, a considerable 32.1% of all overnight stays were made by visitors from outside the country, who primarily chose the Balearic Islands as their major destination.
In terms of hotel occupancy, 66.2% of the rooms that were available were occupied in September 2023, a rise of 3.6% annually.
According to further INE statistics, hotels generated an average daily revenue (ADR) of €116.7 per occupied room in the same month, an increase of 8% over the same period the year prior.
In terms of where people travel from, it's important to note that Germany comes in second with 19.3% of all overnight stays in hotels, closely followed by the United Kingdom at 27.6%.
This increase in overnight stays in Spain is hardly surprising considering the nation's continued allure to tourists. From January to September of this year, Spain welcomed 73.2 million visitors, according to a previous EU Helpers analysis. This figure reflects a 19.1% rise over the same time period in 2022.
