According to the National Bank, there are currently 100,000 international workers in Hungary, with most of them employed in the manufacturing industry. The same report notes that around 20,000 international workers in Hungary are from Ukraine. However, the percentage of workers from Asia has risen significantly, from 18.5% in 2019 to 41%. Recent data indicate that after Ukraine, most international workers now come from the Philippines (9,400) and Vietnam (8,400), rather than Slovakia (7,500) and Romania (6,800), according to Info Start.
The report indicates that 39,000 international workers in Hungary are employed in the manufacturing industry. Nearly 10,000 of these are in vehicle manufacturing, and over 5,000, including those in battery factories, work in electrical equipment manufacturing. Additionally, nearly 5,000 internationals are employed in electronic product manufacturing, and over 10,000 work in the trade sector.
In April of this year, local media reports highlighted that the number of international workers in Hungary had increased by 53,000 since 2010, based on statistics from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH). This increase averages to about 4,000 people per year. Additionally, the statistics revealed that out of the 514,000 internationals who arrived in the country between 2010 and 2023, only 251,000 currently reside there, representing 2.6% of the total population. Among them, 36,000 are temporarily staying in Hungary for educational purposes.
Since 2010, a total of 219,000 Hungarians have emigrated from the country, of whom 219,000 have returned to Hungary. According to a statement by State Secretary for Employment Policy Sándor Czomba, the proportion of international workers in Hungary stands at 2.6% of the total employed population. This contrasts with Slovakia (3.8%), Poland (6.4%), and Czechia (17%).
