During a meeting with the environment minister and the deputy director of the state protected services, Lithuania's interior minister Agn Bilotait disclosed plans to also construct a physical barrier in the wet and swampy areas close to the state border with Belarus and Russia.
In the meeting, it was stated that the physical barrier is required to reinforce the nation's border protection due to an increase in irregular arrivals that have been recorded thus far this year, according to EU Helpers.
Around 700 migrants who attempted to enter Lithuania illegally were halted in marshy regions at the Belarusian border, Minister Bilotait reported.
According to the same, authorities have discovered 13 smuggling incidents in the same region since the year's beginning.
"More border protection measures are required because, just this year, 13 cases of smuggling were discovered, and 700 illegal migrants were prevented from entering marshy areas along the Belarusian border." Premier Bilotait
Because the physical barrier would be built in the border strip, no trees will need to be cut down, according to the Lithuanian Ministry of Interior.
Minister Bilotait further mentioned that the authorities and experts in environmental protection had already evaluated the effect that the physical barriers would have on the environment, emphasizing that the impact would be limited.
Together with experts in environmental protection, we conduct this very carefully while considering any potential effects on the environment. Environmentalists assured us that the damage to the environment would be limited. Premier Bilotait
The majority of Lithuania's border portions with Belarus and Russia are now under observation. Following the hybrid strikes from Belarus and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the nation began to expand its monitoring capabilities.
Lithuania stated that it wants to reinstate coast border patrols in addition to plans to build a physical barrier on the marshy sections of the border with Belarus and Russia.
According to the authorities, the nation intends to take this action in order to further secure its maritime frontiers.
Minister Bilotait stated earlier this month that it is crucial to pay particular attention to the safety of the sea border and the border with Russia in light of the current circumstances. The same article emphasized the necessity for Lithuania to be ready for any hybrid assaults or an uptick in unauthorized immigration.
