The residence requirement for foreigners seeking citizenship is reduced thanks to the legislation's introduction of expedited procedures. Notably, if one parent has been in Germany for five years, the child is automatically granted citizenship.
The Federal Government of Germany has taken a big step by approving a new citizenship law that would simplify the process for foreign people living in the nation to become citizens.
To speed up the process, the new legislation includes simplified norms and processes.
Birthright citizenship and reduced residency requirements
The proposed rule reduces the necessary amount of time spent residing in Germany from eight to five years and is anticipated to go into effect in early 2024. If at least one parent has resided in the nation for five years, citizenship is also granted to children born in Germany to foreign parents.
The new law now permits dual citizenship, so those who obtain German citizenship may also maintain their previous citizenship.
According to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, the new law is among the most significant changes made by the present administration and will increase Germany's appeal to talented employees and immigrants.
"A modern citizenship law is therefore also a decisive key for the competitiveness of Germany as a business location," added Faeser.
A number of additional amendments are also included in the new law, including:
The capacity to support oneself independently and knowledge of the German language are prerequisites for effective integration.
the potential for naturalization for people who have demonstrated exceptional achievement at work or via volunteer activity after three years.
the elimination of the naturalization test for visitors and contract employees who have significantly contributed to Germany's development.
Many people have praised the new citizenship law, including corporate executives and immigrant rights organizations. However, some detractors contend that the law falls short and makes it too difficult for some people to become German citizens.
The recently passed citizenship law includes the following significant features, according to the Interior Ministry:
1. Successful integration and linguistic competence are requirements for naturalization, as are financial self-sufficiency and German language fluency.
2. Shorter Residency Period: As opposed to the previous eight-year requirement, citizenship via naturalization will now be possible after just five years of residence in Germany.
3. Accelerated Naturalization: After three years, those with remarkable work performance or volunteerism, German language fluency, and financial independence will be eligible for an accelerated road to citizenship.
4. Birthright Citizenship: If at least one parent has lawfully remained in Germany for more than five years, the child will automatically get German citizenship.
5. Relaxation of Naturalization Test: For visitors and contract employees who have made a significant contribution to Germany's growth, the naturalization test will be abolished.
Standards for Naturalization
Under the new law, applicants must fulfill the following criteria in order to naturalize:
have at least five years' worth of residence in Germany.
possess a solid command of the German language.
be able to support oneself without assistance.
Become a part of German society.
Additional requirements outlined in the new law include adherence to the free democratic basic order and respect for gender equality.
advantages of being a German citizen
There are several advantages to becoming a German citizen, including:
the ability to cast a ballot and run for office.
the freedom to live and work anywhere in the EU.
traveling with a German passport is permitted.
access to social services and health care.
Germany is paving the way for a more open and thorough citizenship process as it seeks to advance in the global competition for qualified professionals, promoting inclusion while retaining its core principles.
