Poland is intending to enhance its border security with Russia and Belarus by implementing additional barriers like bunkers and trenches, aiming to improve detection of irregular migration. Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz affirmed that his country intends to construct the barriers, with the plan already in preparation stages.
The Defence Minister also highlighted that the budget designated for safeguarding Poland’s borders from irregular migration is at its peak. He mentioned to Radio Zet that the augmented deployment of forces near the border has significantly bolstered security. This action is being taken following a rise in irregular migration observed in 2022, originating from Belarus. The upsurge in irregular migrants was viewed as a coordinated effort orchestrated by Belarus and Russia, aiming to destabilize Poland and the European Union, particularly after the conflict in Ukraine. The 5.5-meter fence, topped with wire, incurred a cost of $407 million and was finalized on June 30, 2022.
According to Frontex, the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency, there were 1,432 recorded border crossings in the first quarter of 2024, indicating a five percent decrease compared to the same period in 2023. During this period, Ukraine emerged as the primary country of origin for migrants, with a total of 522 border crossings recorded in March 2024.
In 2023, there were 5,608 border crossings recorded at the Eastern Land border, the longest in Europe, which encompasses EU countries such as Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, and Romania, bordering non-EU countries including Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova. The main countries of origin for migrants along this route in 2023 were Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Syria.
This border has been a point of contention between Poland, Lithuania, representing the EU, and Russia and Belarus. In 2021, a tragic incident occurred when a dozen migrants perished in the cold after being stranded in a village between the two countries due to pushbacks on both sides of the border.
