Tuesday's event took place in the Epkeliai Marsh, a part of the border that is serviced by the Kabeliai Frontier Station.
Giedrius Miutis, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), told BNS that after crossing the border illegally, "they cut the poles down, the poles fell to the ground, and the persons fled." There are no longer any border "holes" and the stretch is being watched over. The cameras are also operational, and control is maintained in other ways.
The two people, according to Miutis, were not dressed in uniform. In the Varna District near the Epkeliai Marsh, where there is no fence or other physical barrier due to natural circumstances, they entered Lithuania.
According to Miutis, this is the third incident of its like this year. "The two individuals targeted the two cameras, had battery-powered cutting tools, and cut down the two poles holding surveillance cameras that were covering the entire perimeter," he said. He does not completely rule out the possibility of such events.
Over 50 attempts to physically harm the barrier and monitoring systems have been made this year, compared to 467 attempts last year.
The illegal crossing of the state border and any property destruction or damage are the subject of a pre-trial investigation.
Currently, a fence and razor wire are used to fortify 550 kilometers of the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.
With Belarus, Lithuania has a 679-km border, more than 100 km of which include rivers and lakes.
After a migrant crisis in 2021, which Vilnius attributed to the Minsk administration and dubbed a hybrid attack, Lithuania opted to construct the fence.
