Considering the demise of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), the unit will now be known as the GNR Coastal and Border Control Unit. According to EU Helpers, it will be in charge of keeping an eye on, managing, and inspecting land borders as well as maritime ones, including cruise terminals.
According to Portugal News, the Minister claimed that in addition to the 80 SEF inspectors who currently serve in this capacity, 233 GNR officers had received training from SEF to monitor and regulate the borders. These officers have also been temporarily assigned to this security force.
The Minister had previously emphasized that the changes that would result in the termination of SEF would enable border control and inspection to increase security standards.
According to Carneiro, there are observable efficiency advantages. He emphasized that integrated border management is challenged by the SEF's reconstruction, the GNR's and the PSP's transfer of authority over border control and foreigners' activities in Portugal.
As per his statement, after overcoming the phase of structuring political decisions, it is crucial to guarantee the triumph of the transition process.
The Minister emphasized that for several months, PSP and GNR have been working with SEF at the borders in a cooperative process that strengthens the ability to regulate who enters and exits the nation and permits an ongoing, healthy exchange of experiences that will have a positive impact going forward.
He made sure that every matter pertaining to border control and security oversight in the nation was appropriately organized.
The Portuguese Council of Ministers gave the go-ahead in April of this year for the establishment of a new organization that will house the High Commission for Migration (ACM) and replace the SEF.
