Portugal has introduced new visa exemptions for nationals of Brazil and East Timor, allowing them to enter the country without the need for a visa. However, citizens of other nations are still required to follow the existing visa regulations to enter Portugal.
This change aligns with broader efforts to facilitate mobility for citizens of countries within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). One significant development is the introduction of uniform residence permits for CPLP nationals, which will enable them to move freely within the European Union.
Previously, while CPLP visas were granted to nationals of Brazil and East Timor, these permits did not allow for mobility within the EU. This limitation led to the European Union opening an infringement procedure against Portugal for not adhering to EU mobility standards.
To address this, the Portuguese government has proposed changes to the CPLP mobility agreement, which are pending approval by the Government and the Parliament. These amendments aim to issue CPLP residence permits in a standardized format, ensuring that holders can travel across the EU without restrictions.
The issuance of uniform CPLP residence permits became a key component of Portugal's migration policy after being approved by the Assembly of the Republic. In addition, new channels are being established through the Portuguese Agency for Migration and Asylum (AIMA), allowing individuals who regularly enter Portugal to apply for residence permits more efficiently.
These measures are expected to enhance the integration and mobility of CPLP citizens, particularly benefiting nationals from Brazil and East Timor, while ensuring compliance with EU standards.
