According to EU Helpers, 5,055 Cape Verdeans' visa applications were rejected in 2022, accounting for 28.7% of all applications submitted. This means that one in three citizens of the nation had their visa application rejected.
With 722 and 548 denials per 100,000 residents, respectively, Kosovo and Suriname are the next and third-highest visa application denial per capita countries on the list. The Schengen Statistics data shows that as a result, every ninth Kosovar and every fifth Surinamese have had their application denied.
In addition, it's projected that 13,674 applications from Kosovo residents—or 11.2% of the population—were turned down, compared to 3,416 applications from Surinamese citizens, or 20.1% of the population.
Additionally, the United Arab Emirates had 442 refusals per 100,000 persons, meaning that every fourth applicant there had a denial. Meanwhile, 22.4% of the population had their visa requests denied. In 2022, a total of 42,105 Emirati applications were turned down.
Algerians, Tunisians, and Lebanese were the next three nationalities to receive the most rejections. Per 100,000 persons, there were 393 visa applications that were turned down overall in Algeria, 392 in Tunisia, and 340 in Lebanon.
In overall, only 46% of Algerians had visa denials in 2022, followed by 29% of Tunisians and 18.3% of Lebanese, with 48,909 and 18,232, respectively, of the latter two nationalities, being rejected as applicants. Particularly many Algerian applicants were turned down, with 179,409 negative responses.
Due to their high rejection rate and huge number of denied applications for 2022, Algerians have incurred the greatest costs for rejected applicants, totaling €31.93 million.
Qatar, Morocco, and Armenia, which had between 200 and 350 rejected candidates, round out the top ten nationalities with the highest rejection rates of applicants per 100,000 population.
For example, if there were 100,000 Qatari citizens, the 325 rejected applicants would mean that 8,837 of their visa requests were turned down, or 11% of the overall population. In other words, a visa was turned down for every ninth applicant from Qatar in the previous year.
Every fourth Moroccan had their application rejected, but in 2022 there were 119,346 people who had their applications completely rejected. This translates to a rejection rate of 315 for every 100,000 persons, or 45.7% of the population.
Armenia rounded out the top ten nationalities with the most visa applications turned down per 100,000 population, with 283 people receiving a denial.
In Armenia, the percentage of the population who had their visa requests denied rose to 12.7% in 2022. This indicates that Armenia had one of the highest rates of applicants who were turned down (every eighth person).
