The Swedish government plans to appoint a special investigator to review the country's regulations for granting residence permits based on affiliation. The assignment is based on an agreement between the government and the Sweden Democrats and must be reported no later than August 25, 2025.
Sweden Considers Stricter Conditions for Family Member Immigration and Limited Opportunities for Residence Permits
Last year, the Swedish government decided to consult the Council on Legislation regarding proposals for stricter conditions on family member immigration in certain cases and restricted opportunities to grant residence permits on humanitarian grounds.
Minister for Migration, Maria Malmer Stenergard, stated that due to extensive immigration in recent years and a lack of integration, Sweden is facing significant challenges related to growing exclusion.
To address this trend, she highlighted the need for several measures. She noted that the proposals are now being referred to the Council on Legislation and emphasized that a significant shift in Swedish migration policy is being implemented, which is expected to reduce immigration to Sweden.
The proposals include increasing the age limit for denying a residence permit based on personal ties from 18 to 21 years. Additionally, it was proposed to remove the provisions that allow residence permits to be granted on the grounds of particularly distressing circumstances.
